Dog Mt and Suicide Bluffs

Gerard Laman

With four people we started the Dog Mountain trail. This trail was restored many years ago for the first 300 meters but then returned to the old trail with lots of roots and rocks to scramble over. The water level at the First Lake was lower than normal due to the dry period we are having. The day was sunny so that at the Dog Mountain lookout we had great views of Vancouver, but with some haze in the distance. After our little snack break we returned via the Suicide Bluffs trail.

This trail is not well known and we only met a few other hikers. Because it’s not much used it’s less eroded than the Dog Mountain section and more pleasant to hike even when it’s steeper at some sections. At two places ropes have been installed that help to make the climb easier. We had our lunch at the first viewpoint of the Suicide Bluffs that is higher than Dog Mountain. After lunch we continued our hike with many down and uphill sections to the Mount Seymour trail. We followed this trail downhill till the parking lot.

This was a great hike on a sunny day with great people.
