Cheakamus Canyon

At the beginning of the week, the sky was hazy due to the wildfires and there was concern that the air quality was not good for hiking. Fortunately the air had cleared-up later in the week and the hike was a go. On a sunny Saturday morning we left with nine BOC members for the trailhead of Cheakamus Canyon Trail. With a clear sky we would get great views of the Cloudburst Mountain and the Tantalus range and below in the canyon we could see the Cheakamus River and also the railroad track. After a short hike we had to climb over some large rocks and concrete blocks to cross the railroad track and continued the trail passing Starvation Lake. We enjoyed the view of the local mountains with the snow-covered peaks. Sometimes we had a view of the railroad track where it followed the Cheakamus River at the bottom of the canyon. We had to walk over some steel wired mesh that covered a section of the trail that had disappeared into the canyon. We stopped for lunch at the end of the trail that also provided us with great panoramic views of the mountains and the canyon. We also saw the Rocky Mountain Express Train close to the Cheakamus River on its way to the Rocky Mountains. After lunch we returned our hike on the same trail. When we reached Starvation Lake several of the group decided to go for a swim. After being efreshed we continued our hike to our cars. This was a great hike with great views and perfect weather.
